Midweek Conversations – October

After the summer break, our Midweek Conversations are back—bringing together colleagues and guests to share research insights, foster critical discussion, and nurture the intellectual ferment that defines our School’s culture.

We are pleased to open this new academic season by welcoming Dr. Ester Martínez Sanzo, visiting PhD from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, who joined us to present her current work and engage in conversation with the MSMC community.

Due to ongoing student demonstrations in support of the Palestinian cause, the session was held online, as access to faculty premises was temporarily suspended. In respectful solidarity with the motivations of the protest, we nonetheless chose to preserve this space for dialogue and reflection—continuing to cultivate our shared commitment to open, rigorous, and responsible academic exchange.

Media Coverage of Artificial Intelligence Regulation in Spain and Italy

Ester Martínez Sanzo – Universidad Carlos III de Madrid

This presentation introduces an ongoing PhD project analyzing how leading Spanish and Italian newspapers cover key regulatory milestones in the development of artificial intelligence (AI). The study focuses on El País and El Mundo in Spain, and Il Corriere della Sera and la Repubblica in Italy, with particular attention to the publication of the National AI Strategies and the entry into force of the European AI Act.

The project employs qualitative content analysis, aiming to identify the thematic focus of news coverage, the framing of AI-related issues, and the prominence of different regulatory topics across countries.

This research seeks to understand cross-national differences in media framing of AI regulation and the ways in which media coverage shapes public perception and discourse regarding AI governance.
